Project Success - After School Program
We are currently looking for chess and checker boards and game pieces. If you have some you no longer want please send them into the school. It would be greatly appreciated!
Project Success, better known as the After School Program, has certainly been a success. Students in grades 3-12 can come and participate in mini classes, get tutoring help, and ride the bus home at 5:30 pm. There is also a 1st and 2nd grade program on Wednesdays. Headed by Carol Stratemeyer and Tracey Dean, and backed up by numerous other volunteers, students have the opportunity to grow tremendously throughout the year.
Program Brags:
This is a letter to Ms. Branum from Sandi Smith of the Montana Office of Public Instruction about the afterschool program here at Noxon:
Dear Ms. Branum,
The visit on March 14th to the Noxon afterschool program was enlightening. Looking at the compliance requirements with Carol revealed that Noxon is 100 percent compliant. Carol is an outstanding resource to the Noxon community and its afterschool program. We are also delighted that the Noxon School District provides so much support for the afterschool program such as transportation through Title I. Tracey, also, has been a valuable resource to the program.
Carol and Tracey have many wonderful activities that keep the students actively engaged after school. They make sure that academic skills are a part of each of the activities. In the cooking classes, students are weighing and measuring, dealing with fractions, and preparing nutritious recipes. I was very impressed by the quilting and woodworking projects that the students have created. What a sense of pride all of these projects give to the Noxon students.
Having the homework/tutoring time allows all children to complete schoolwork and be on top of school day assignments. The extra tutoring helps students gain proficiency in reading and math.
Family nights that the children prepare with meals, table settings, and serving provide a wonderful evening for the community as the students show off their projects.
The community garden done in partnership with the Senior Center is one of the best projects. Along with the garden in the summer, the afterschool program provides students with activities that many of them may never have an opportunity to participate in such as geo-caching and archery. Noxon is a depressed area and Carol and the afterschool program provide richness to the lives of its students.
I am always amazed with the resources that Carol finds in such remote areas. She has been an outstanding regional chair and the $5000 that the Noxon program receives for her leadership will continue next year. I know Carol has not budgeted any of that into her salary, but continues to put it into programming.
Sincerely,
Sandi Smith
